What is hot linking a banner?
What is downloading a banner?
The alternative to hot linking an image is downloading & self-hosting it. This means you save the banner image from the original location and upload it to your own hosting server.
Which one is better?
There are pros/cons to each method, but I always recommend using the download method over hot linking.
The plus side of hot linking is that it's easier to do than manually downloading/uploading an image. However, if you're going to hot link to an image, make sure the owner is ok with it, as it's taboo and looked at as bandwidth theft to do it without explicit permission.
If you want to use the download method but aren't sure how, here is a basic outline of the steps:
- Go to the web page where the image is displayed and right click on it. There will be some kind of 'save image' option (the wording varies depending on your browser).
- Save the image to your computer (remember the location where you save it to)
The steps to insert it on your website will vary, as it depends on whether it's going on your links page or one of your normal content pages. If it's going on normal content page, you'd use the 'Insert Image' tool in your editor toolbar. If it's going on your links page, you'll see the option to upload a banner image when you click on 'Add Link' in the Link manager area.
